Familiar Faces Win on Hall of Fame night at Jennerstown
Awtey wins seventh late model race of year

JENNERSTOWN, August 13 – It was business as usual for many of the drivers at Jennerstown Speedway on Saturday evening, as many of this season’s previous winners took another trip to victory lane. The only exception being Darin Mauzy.

Mauzy, who is in his rookie season in the Farmer’s Union Co-Op Division, won his first ever career race at Jennerstown on Saturday night. The Davidsville driver had to fight for the lead, but made the pass half way through the race around Ken Burkholder for his first win.

In fitting fashion, Mauzy dons the paint scheme of now Hall of Famer Larry Hemminger. Hemminger, who owns the car and is a part owner of the racetrack, was inducted into the Jennerstown Speedway Hall of Fame during opening ceremonies. Other inductees included pace truck driver Gary Boxler, and former drivers Richard Mitchell, Clate
Husted (posthumously) and Gus Linder (posthumously).

A few “future” Hall of Famers also picked up wins on Saturday.

Barry Awtey continued his dominant season in the Martella’s Pharmacies Late Models. Already the track’s winningest driver, Awtey picked up his seventh win of the season this week, but it didn’t come easy.

Just three laps into the race, Awtey was racing three-wide with Teddy Gibala and Owen Houpt for fifth. Gibala and Houpt got together and Awtey became collateral damage. He would suffer even more damage later when the cars stacked up in front of him after the restart as he drove into the back of Jeremy Shaffer and got into the wall. Despite the setbacks, he still couldn’t be beat.

Ethan Myers lead the first 23 laps of the race in a new car that Awtey helps work on, but after suffering some brake issues Myers started to fall off the pace, allowing Awtey to get by him with just seven laps to go. Jarred Barclay finished second, and Brian Shipp third.

In the One Stop Auto Sales Pro Stocks, Adam Kostelnik picked up his fifth win of the season. Kostelnik started on the pole and lead all 20 laps of the feature event. He now sits second in the point standings behind Jeff Giles with just six weeks left in the season. Giles finished third on Saturday night. Kyle Burkolder came home second.

It was a good night for the Kimberly Racing team. To go along with Kostelnik’s victory, the team also saw Angie Kimberly earn her third win of the season in the Ron’s Collision Center Street Stocks.

Former track champion Steve Long was out in front for most of the race. Kimberly, running in third, struggled to get around Brent Bickerstaff for second. They both caught the leader Long and made it a three-way battle for first. Kimberly finally got around Bickerstaff and used her momentum to propel to the lead, bringing her dad, Dale Kimberly, with her. The father-daughter duo finished first and second. The points leader, Greg Burbidge, made his was to third. Long and Bickerstaff finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

In the Somerset Trust Fast N’ Furious 4’s, points leader Jonathan Haburcsak had to survive several restarts to earn his fourth win of the season. Haburcsak started on the pole and drove out to a big lead. With eight laps to go, Caleb Vasos car had an issue and came to stop on the track bringing out the caution. Vasos, who is running second in the points behind Haburcsak, had to be pushed into his pit stall and did not finish the race.

On the restart, Haburcsak was lined up next to Lance Shawley on the outside. Shawley has shown speed at times this season with two feature race wins of his own. Haburscak got the jump, but after completing just one lap, the caution flew ago for Allen Ohler who spun in Turn 2.

Haburscak got the jump again on the restart, but Michael Strouse and Donald Hillegas got together before the cars could even complete another lap, setting up yet another restart. Again, Haburcsak was quick to throttle and cleared Shawley into the first turn and drove off for the win. Shawley finished second, and Skylar Berkey third.

It seemed like an easy win for Doug Glessner in the Stoystown Auto Wreckers Modifieds. The Boswell driver lead the division last year in wins, and now has more than anyone else this season with four. On Saturday night, he started on the front row and lead every lap of the twenty-lap feature. Despite missing two races this year, Glessner still sits fourth in the point standings.

Jennerstown Speedway will host an Autograph Night on Saturday, August 20. Fans will have a chance to be on the track and meet the drivers before the races. The autograph session will begin at 5:15pm and racing will start at 6:30pm.
